Back-to-back!

For the second-straight season, and for the third time since 2008, the Key West Ramblers are champions of the Prairie League. The Ramblers captured the title once again by out-slugging Peosta 11-6 on Saturday at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta.

Key West (40-12) trailed 6-4 heading to the bottom of the sixth following a four-run fifth for Peosta. But the Ramblers roared back with a seven-run frame in the sixth to seal the team's third championship of the season. No walk-off grand slams would be necessary in this contest.

"It's huge for us to have a 40-win season and end it the right way -- with a championship," Dan Spain told the Telegraph Herald. "And it's even better knowing we did it with the same core group of guys.

"The whole year, we never felt like we were out of games. If one guy didn't get the big hit, the next guy would."

Five different Ramblers tallied at least one hit in the sixth inning, including left fielder Cory Davidson, who cracked a double and a single and scored a run and drove in a run in the outburst. Even starting pitcher Sean O'Connor got in on the scoring barrage with an RBI single. Kenny Capesius, Spencer Kuehn and Spain also added a single apiece in the sixth.

The offensive surge made a winner out of O'Connor, who improved to 3-0 on the season. The right-hander and former Clarke University hurler tossed six innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks to go along with two punch outs. Spencer Kuehn relieved O'Connor in the seventh and fired a scoreless inning to pick up his first save of 2012.

Key West got on top early when Dan Spain connected for a solo homer, his fourth of the season, in the bottom of the first inning. An O'Connor run-scoring fielder's choice in the second and RBI doubles by Kuehn (third) and Andrew Redman (fifth) provided the offense prior to the game-deciding sixth-inning fireworks.

Peosta mustered a single run each in the third and fourth innings to get within 3-2. Peosta made its push for a championship with the big sixth inning, but left two men on base to end the game in the seventh.

The Rambler offensive attack was anything but rusty after a layoff of 20 days between games. Seven players recorded exactly two hits: Chris Briggs (2-for-4), Capesius (2-for-4), Davidson (2-for-5), Kuehn (2-for-3), O'Connor (2-for-4), Redman (2-for-4) and Spain (2-for-5). Collectively, Key West tallied 15 hits.

The Ramblers conclude the 2012 season with a franchise record 40 victories and championships at the Worthington Tournament, the Dyersville Tournament and the Prairie League finals. In the process, Key West improved to 220-155 since 2004 and now has a total of six championships over the past two seasons. The Ramblers won the 2011 Prairie League title over Farley, thanks to a walk-off grand slam by Ben Cottrell.

Prairie League Championships pairings announced

The Ramblers will look to defend their 2011 Prairie League title when this year's championships get started on Sunday at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta. Key West, which finished with a league-best 15-1 record, draws Dubuque (11-5) in the second semifinal game at 2 p.m.

In the other semifinal matchup, Bernard (12-4), winner of the Prairie League's American League division, takes on Peosta (9-7) at 12 p.m. The two semifinal winners will advance to play in the championship at the immediate conclusion of the semifinals.

The Ramblers, who have not played since their Aug. 19 loss to Dyersville in the first round of the Peosta Tournament, captured the 2011 Prairie League championship with a 6-5 victory over Farley in the title game. Ben Cottrell cracked a dramatic, walk-off grand slam to lift Key West over Farley. The Ramblers got by Epworth 2-1 in the semifinals of last year's Prairie League Championships at Farley Park.

Bats silenced as Dyersville bounces Ramblers from Peosta

Dyersville starting pitcher Ben Retenmeyer barely broke a sweat in a shutout of the Ramblers Sunday night in the first round of the Peosta Tournament. Retenmeyer struck out 10 and set down the Key West lineup in order in five of his seven innings in the leading Dyersville to a 3-0 victory at A.J. Spiegel Park.

The Ramblers (38-12) threatened to score in both the second and fourth innings, but failed to come up with the key two-out hit that they needed. The last three frames saw Retenmeyer tighten the screws as he retired the final 10 Key West hitters of the game to send Dyersville to the quarterfinal round.

Shawn Parker matched zeroes with Retenmeyer until the bottom of the sixth when Dyersville finally took advantage of Parker's wildness. Parker struck out the first hitter of the inning, but back-to-back walks proved fatal when both resulted in runs later in the frame. Dyersville would then add one more tally to complete a three-run sixth inning that all but put the game away with Retenmeyer dealing on the mound.

Parker fired 6.1 innings in defeat. He allowed seven hits, six walks and three runs (all earned), while posting seven strikeouts. Sean O'Connor relieved Parker and got the final two outs in the seventh inning.

Chris Briggs, Spencer Kuehn and Justin Kuhle each singled for the only three hits of the game for the Ramblers, which featured its regular cast of heavy hitters.

Key West will be in action for the final time this season when it hosts the Prairie League Championships in Peosta. The complete schedule for the Prairie League Championships will be posted when available.

Ramblers run out of gas

The Ramblers came down from the high of winning Saturday's Dyersville Tournament championship game with a sluggish performance on Sunday in the semifinals of the EIHL Championships. Key West (38-11) was vying for its third-straight appearance in the EIHL title game, but simply had little left in the tank and fell 7-2 to Cascade in the day's first semifinal matchup.

Sunday's game, which marked the seventh in the last nine days for the Ramblers, went Cascade's way from the very beginning. Cascade held Key West scoreless in the top of the first and then jumped on top immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Run-scoring singles by Tim Andrews and Reagen Takes highlighted the onslaught off of Rambler starting pitcher Spencer Kuehn.

The Reds later added a run in the third and two more in the fifth to put the contest out of reach at 7-0. Finally, Key West got on the board when Tim Carty smacked a two-run homer, his third of the season, in the top of the sixth to cap all scoring on the afternoon.

Kuehn tossed the first four innings, giving up six hits, three walks and five runs (all earned) while fanning three. Aaron Collins, one of the heroes of Saturday's title victory, worked the final two innings and allowed two unearned runs.

Second basemen Andrew Redman, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, was the only Rambler to record at least two hits in the game.

Key West is now 4-2 against Cascade this season.

The Ramblers will close the 2012 season with the Prairie League Championships and the Peosta Tournament. Pairings for the Prairie League Championships will be posted upon announcement. Key West drew Dyersville in the first round of the Peosta Tournament. That game is set for Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.

Ramblers make history in Dyersville

No Key West semi-pro baseball team had ever advanced to the title game in the 62 years of the historic Dyersville Tournament. That drought ended Saturday night with the Ramblers (38-10) claiming a 4-2, 11-inning thriller over host Dyersville for the team's second tournament championship of the season and fifth in the past two years.

Aaron Collins, a Coe College product, emerged as the hero both with the bat and on the mound. Collins knocked home the tying run in the ninth inning to keep the game alive, played a key role in the game-deciding 11th inning and picked up the win with two solid innings of work in relief.

With the score tied 2-2, Collins cracked his second hit of the evening in the 11th after Cam Stewart was plunked to lead the inning off. Ryan Kelly followed with a potential double-play grounder to short that went for an error and allowed Stewart to score the go-ahead run. Tim Carty notched an RBI single two batters later to give Collins some room to breath.

Collins would then face the minimum in the bottom half of the 11th. After a lead-off single by Matt Ungs, the left-hander induced a 6-4-3 double play grounder off the bat of Beau Ellingson. The celebration was on as Aaron Becker grounded out to short to clinch the title at Jenk Field.

"We were fortunate enough to take advantage of some mistakes," Carty told the Telegraph Herald. "They played a great game and we were lucky enough to get some breaks and the ball rolled our way in the 11th."

The Ramblers never would have gotten that chance in the 11th had it not been for Collins' clutch RBI single in the ninth. Tanner Denlinger began the frame with a walk and advanced to third with one out after a pair of wild pitches. With the Dyersville infield drawn in to protect its one-run lead, Collins guided a floater into right center to force extra innings.

"It was a team effort, it was a great team win," Kelly said in an interview with the TH. "Everyone contributed in some way, whether it was at the plate, defensively or on the mound - the whole tournament."

Kelly was named the tournament's MVP after another strong performance on Saturday. The former Clarke University pitcher tossed the first nine innings, surrendering eight hits, three walks and two runs (both earned) while striking out 10. Kelly also got the win over Cascade on Wednesday when he fired a seven-inning complete game. In his two tournament outings, Kelly threw 16 innings and allowed 15 hits, five walks and three earned runs and fanned 18 hitters.

Kelly (2-for-6) was also one of five Ramblers to collect two hits in Saturday's championship. Kelly was joined by Collins (2-for-2), Denlinger (2-for-4), Briggs (2-for-6) and Dan Spain (2-for-6) as Ramblers with multiple hits.

The game also featured several remarkable defensive plays on the part of the Ramblers. Carty, Denlinger and Deon Ploessl each turned in at least one great effort with the glove to save potentially crippling runs.

Key West has a chance at another championship on Sunday when it will play Cascade at 12 p.m. in the semifinals of the EIHL Championships. The winner will play again on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the championship.

Ramblers to play for another championship

The Ramblers will play in their fourth championship game this season when they challenge host Dyersville in the title game of the Dyersville Tournament on Saturday night. Home runs by Tanner Denlinger and Chris Briggs powered Key West (37-10) to an 8-3 semifinal victory over Bellevue late on Friday night. The victory counted as a two-for-one and allowed the Ramblers to break a franchise mark for wins in a season.

Key West's Shawn Parker and Bellevue's Dave Smith traded zeroes on the mound through the first two frames of the affair until the Ramblers busted loose for four runs in the top of the third. Denlinger spurred the outburst with a solo shot, his first of the season, to lead off the inning and make the score 1-0.

Two batters latter Cory Davidson walked and Dan Spain followed with an RBI double. Tim Carty and Justin Kuhle added RBI singles in the inning to boost the lead to 4-0.

Chad Crabill cracked a run-scoring triple in the top of the sixth and then scored on a wild pitch to give Key West a commanding 6-1 lead with Parker appearing to cruise on the hill.

But back-to-back singles by Mike Griebel and Chet Knake to begin the bottom of the sixth sparked a two-run Bellevue rally to get within 6-3.

Briggs then provided plenty of breathing room in the top of the seventh by belting a two-run blast to push the Rambler advantage back up to five runs at 8-3. The homer was Briggs' 11th of the season and upped his season RBI total to 49.

Bidding for a perfect seventh and final inning, Parker allowed a two-out single to Cole Reeg in Bellevue's last gasp. Parker ended the game by getting Griebel to fly out to center field.

Parker surrendered seven hits, two walks and three runs (one earned) and struck out six in his first career start with Key West.

Spain led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 night in which he scored a run, drove in a run and stole two bases. Six Ramblers notched one hit apiece as part of the team's nine-hit attack.

Saturday's Dyersville Tournament Championship will be held at 7:30 p.m. The Ramblers will then shift their focus to Sunday's EIHL Championships. Key West takes on Cascade in the first semifinal game at 12 p.m.

Pairings set for EIHL Championships

The Ramblers will appear in the EIHL Championships for the sixth-consecutive season when they take the field in Cascade on Sunday for the semifinals. Key West (37-10) will play top-seeded Cascade in the first game of the four-team playoff. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.

Dubuque and Rickardsville will battle at 1:30 p.m. in the other semifinal with the two winners advancing to the championship game at 3 p.m.

The Ramblers seek their first-ever EIHL title after losing in the championship final in each of the last two seasons. Key West has two Prairie League championships to its credit (2008 and 2011).

Late rally lifts Ramblers to Dyersville semifinals

A day after taking a 16-5 bludgeoning from Cascade in EIHL play, the Ramblers rebounded with a 4-3 win over that same Cascade team in the quarterfinals of the Dyersville Tournament. Key West (35-10) got a strong performance from starting pitcher Ryan Kelly and Cory Davidson came through at the plate Wednesday evening at Jenk Field.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth against Cascade pitcher Pat Weber, Davidson sparked a three-run rally with a one-out triple. After back-to-back hit batters and a wild pitch tied the score at 2-2, a Chris Briggs' sacrifice fly and a Kelly RBI single put the Ramblers ahead 4-2.

Key West maintained its two-run lead until the top of the seventh when Cascade tried to stage a comeback. Tom Andrews led off with a single and scored on a one-out double by Calvin Rea. But Kelly retired Tim Andrews on a pop out on the mound and then struck out Dan Lynch swinging to end the game.

Kelly got his fourth win of the season in a complete seven-inning outing. He allowed seven hits, two walks, three runs (one earned) and struck out eight.

Davidson broke out of his slump with a 2-for-3 effort that included a double, a triple and a run. Briggs finished 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI.

The Ramblers advance to Friday's semifinals when they play Bellevue at 8:30 p.m. Dyersville and Zwingle will battle at 6:30 p.m. in the other semifinal matchup. Bellevue topped Rickardsville 8-5 on Wednesday.

The winners will play in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The losers challenge each other in the consolation game at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

NOTES: Key West's win over Cascade on Wednesday also counted as an EIHL victory for a game originally scheduled on July 20 between the two teams. With the wins, the Ramblers tied their franchise mark of 35 victories in a season. Key West finished at 35-13 in 2011 ... The Ramblers are seeking their first Dyersville Tournament championship in team history. Earlier this season they won the Worthington Tournament for the first time ever ... Chris Briggs now has 47 RBIs on the season, a figure that shatters his previous team record of 35 RBIs (2010) in one season. Briggs has also broken records for home runs (10) and total bases (103) in 2012 ... The final town tournament for Key West in the 2012 season will be the Peosta Tournament. Pairings have not yet been announced.

Dominant pitching fuels perfect weekend

Behind a pair of masterful pitching performances the Ramblers notched three wins over the weekend, including a 1-0 pitcher's duel over Farley at the Dyersville Tournament. That victory also counted as a Prairie League win, meaning Key West (33-9) will have Monday off.

Andrew Redman continued his incredible 2012 season on Saturday in the first round triumph at the Dyersville Tournament. Redman, despite developing a blister on his pitching hand, fired six shutout innings while limiting Farley to only two hits and two walks. The right-hander is now 8-1 with a 1.35 ERA.

Sean O'Connor got the final three outs in the seventh inning to get the save. O'Connor has yet to allow an earned run in 19 innings of work this season.

Andy Seabrooke was nearly as good as Redman on the other side, but the Ramblers got the only run they would need in the very first inning when Chris Briggs' sacrifice fly brought home Dan Spain, who reached on a double. Seabrooke took the loss despite giving up only four hits.

On Sunday another Key West starting pitcher turned in a sparkling performance as Aaron Collins shined in a 3-1 victory over Bernard. Making his fourth start of the season, Collins threw six innings, surrendering four hits, four walks and one earned run to go with a pair of punch outs. Collins' fourth win of the season was preserved by Shawn Parker, a former Simpson College pitcher, who earned the save with a scoreless seventh inning.

The Ramblers got two runs in the second and one in the third off of Bernard pitcher Eric DeSousa. Parker started the game in left field in led the way with a 2-for-3 day that included a run scored.

Key West is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Cascade at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta at 7 p.m. in an EIHL game. The Ramblers will play Cascade again on Wednesday when they resume play in the quarterfinal round of the Dyersville Tournament.

Dubuque tops Ramblers again

Fueled by a clutch two-run homer by Tim Carty in the bottom of the eighth, the Ramblers rallied back for a 4-4 tie before falling 5-4 to Dubuque on Tuesday night in Peosta. For the sixth time in eight meetings this season, Dubuque got the best of Key West in a battle of area powers.

Dubuque designated hitter Aaron Sauegling singled off of reliever Ryan Kelly with one out in the top of the ninth and ultimately scored on a wild pitch for the game's deciding run. The loss was the Ramblers' fourth in their last five games and their third straight against the Blues.

Key West (30-9) got on top early with a pair of runs off Doug Eisenman in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single delivered by Chris Briggs. The Ramblers were able to take advantage of two Dubuque errors in the frame.

That lead held up for Rambler starting pitcher Spencer Kuehn until the fourth inning when Dubuque capitalized on back-to-back one-out walks and an error to push across two unearned runs to knot the score at 2-2.

Kuehn gave way to Kelly at the end of six innings with the score still tied. Kuehn struck out seven and surrendered only two hits and no earned runs, but did struggle at times with control (five walks).

More wildness proved problematic in the seventh when Dubuque scored twice to take a 4-2 lead. Kelly issued back-to-back walks with one out and later relinquished an RBI double to Kevin Carkeek. Kelly's own error allowed another unearned Blues run.

Carty's late-inning heroics gave the Ramblers a shot at ending their struggles against Dubuque. But Kelly could not hold the Blues scoreless in the ninth and Key West failed to cross the plate in the bottom of the ninth despite a one-out double from Chad Crabill. Crabill ended the game stranded at third base.

The Ramblers get back to tournament action on Saturday when they play Farley at 6 p.m. as part of the Dyersville Tournament.

Briggs shatters home run record in rout of New Vienna

Chris Briggs' seven home runs entering play on Sunday were enough to tie his own team single-season record set back in 2010. With three home runs in Sunday's 16-0 romp over New Vienna, Briggs shattered the Rambler home run mark and pushed his season RBI total to 43 (also a team record) with six more.

Briggs, who now has 10 home runs on the season, struck out swinging in the first inning when Key West (30-8, 12-1 Prairie League) pushed across a pair of runs to take an early lead. The Ramblers got two more in the second to go ahead 4-0 before the fireworks got started in the third inning.

That's when Briggs connected for his first home run of the day with a solo shot that made the score 5-0. Run-scoring hits by Deon Ploessl, Ryan Kelly and Chad Crabill gave Key West an 8-0 cushion and allowed Briggs to come to the plate for a second time in the frame.

With the bases loaded, the left-handed slugger crushed his second homer of the game to provide the Ramblers a commanding 12-0 lead and capped an eight-run inning.

But Briggs wasn't finished yet. After walking and coming around to score in the fifth inning, the first baseman got one more crack in the top of the seventh. With two outs and no one on base, Briggs clubbed a solo shot, making him just the second Rambler ever with three home runs in a game, and the first to accomplish the feat since Michael Jimenez did so on May 15 of last year in an 18-1 win over Placid.

Briggs finished 3-for-4. Four other Ramblers joined Briggs with multiple hits: Matt Knabel (3-for-5), Ploessl (3-for-5), Crabill (2-for-4) and Kelly (2-for-4).

On the mound, Aaron Collins shined in his third start of the season. He tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout that included 12 strikeouts. Collins is now 3-0 with 26 punch outs in 20 innings on the season.

Key West returns to action on Tuesday when it challenges Dubuque for the final time in league play. The game is set for 7 p.m. in Peosta. Key West and Dubuque have already met seven times this season with Dubuque coming away victorious in five of those contests.

Rambler Notes

-Two additions to the Key West schedule have been announced. The Ramblers have drawn Farley in the first round of the Dyersville Tournament. That game will be played Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. at Dyersville's Jenk Field. On Aug. 5, Key West will play at Bernard at 2:30 p.m. in a Prairie League make-up game. View the entire updated schedule HERE.

-The Ramblers will look to shake off a three-game losing streak when they travel to New Vienna for a 1:30 p.m. contest on Sunday. Saturday's scheduled afternoon Prairie League game was canceled due to a conflict for host Balltown. Instead, Key West (29-8) has been awarded a two-for-one for its 1-0 victory over Balltown on June 23 in the Worthington Tournament.

-A poor all-around showing resulted in a 7-6 upset loss to Worthington in the Ramblers' most recent game this past Tuesday night. Key West committed four errors and relinquished an early 3-0 lead. The Ramblers suffered defeat despite multiple hits from four different players, including two hits each from their top-three batters in the lineup. Spencer Kuehn took the loss in relief (despite four solid innings) of starting pitcher Nick Baldocci.

-The return of Sean O'Connor next week will give Key West a significant boost down the stretch. O'Connor, a former Clarke University standout, was the team's most reliable pitcher last season when he went 10-1 with a 2.36 ERA. In 18 innings of work this season, the right-hander has yet to allow an earned run and sports a 2-0 record, one save and 23 strikeouts.

-Despite the recent three-game slide, the Ramblers' .784 win percentage this season is an improvement from their .729 mark in 2011. Their current win percentage would set a new franchise record since Key West's return to semi-pro baseball in 2004.

-With an 11-1 Prairie League record and 9-2 EIHL mark, the Ramblers are on track to reach the playoffs in both leagues for the sixth-consecutive year, a claim that no other team can make. Key West won Prairie League championships in 2008 and 2011 and was runner up in 2009. The Ramblers have also been EIHL runner up in each of the last two seasons.

Dubuque tags Redman with first loss

Andrew Redman won each of his first seven starts in 2012, but saw his streak snapped Saturday night in a tough-luck 2-1 loss to Dubuque in the first round of the Cascade Tournament. It was the seventh meeting of the season between the two semi-pro heavyweights.

Key West (28-7) drew first blood in the top of the second inning when Justin Kuhle's RBI single off Aaron Saeugling drove home Spencer Kuehn with two outs.

Still leading 1-0 in the top of the fourth, the Ramblers missed out on a golden opportunity to add to their lead. Tim Carty and Kuehn led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then advanced to second and third with one out after a Nick Baldocci sacrifice bunt. But Saeugling struck out Redman and got Kuhle to fly out to center to end the threat.

Dubuque's B.J. Juergens tied the score in the bottom half with an RBI single. Dubuque appeared to have the makings of a big inning with two on and no out, but Redman retired three of the next four hitters to keep the game knotted, 1-1.

Andy Danna then struck for the game-winning RBI in the fifth when his one-out double provided the final tally.

The Ramblers failed to mount a late rally as Saeugling (14 strikeouts on Saturday) retired the final eight Key West hitters of the game to send Dubuque to the next round in Cascade. Kuehn, who went 2-for-3, was the only Rambler to notch multiple hits.

Redman finished with a six-inning complete game in which he allowed two earned runs, seven hits and three walks. The right-hander struck out five.

Saturday's contest marked the third time this season that Key West and Dubuque were paired in the first round of a tournament. Dubuque has won all three of those meetings. The Ramblers' last win over Dubuque came June 29 when they shutout the Blues 5-0 in the semifinals of the Worthington Tournament.

Key West's scheduled Prairie League game with Bellevue on Sunday afternoon was postponed due to Bellevue's tournament game at the Zwingle Fest. The Ramblers will return to action on Tuesday when they host Worthington in Peosta at 7 p.m.

Ramblers fall for first time in Prairie League

The Ramblers entered Thursday's Prairie League battle with Peosta sporting a perfect 9-0 league mark, but a cold night at the plate ended Key West's unbeaten run. Peosta's Zack Brautigam held the Ramblers to just three hits as he picked up the win on the mound in a 3-1 decision.

Missing its top power hitter in first baseman Chris Briggs, the Key West (28-6) lineup went scoreless through the first five frames of the seven-inning affair. Not until Justin Kuhle raced home on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth did the Ramblers tally their first run of the game to pull within 2-1.

Trailing 3-1 in the final inning, Key West went down quietly after Kenny Capesius walked to lead off the inning. Brautigam struck out Tim Carty with a man on first to end the game and snap the Ramblers' nine-game Prairie League winning streak, which dated back to Aug. 17 of last year when Key West lost 6-5 to Bellevue.

Peosta got on top of Rambler starting pitcher Spencer Kuehn early, getting two runs in the bottom of the first with the benefit of three-straight singles with one out. Peosta added one more run in the fifth to provide the final margin.

The loss was the first of the season for Kuehn, who dropped to 5-1. He went all six innings, allowing four hits, four walks and three earned runs in a six-strikeout performance.

Carty, Kuehn and Kuhle each collected a single for the only three Key West hits.

The Ramblers get back to tournament play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the Cascade Tournament where they face Dubuque once again. Key West is 2-4 this season against Dubuqe. Andrew Redman (7-0, 1.31 ERA) will get the start on the mound for the Ramblers.

Ramblers pull away late in victory at Epworth

The Ramblers were locked in a tight 3-3 battle with Epworth heading into the top of the seventh when Key West burst open the game with a five-run frame on the way to a 10-5 Prairie League road victory on Sunday afternoon. Key West (28-5) remained unbeaten in the Prairie League with a spotless 10-0 mark.

Tim Carty led off the seventh by getting drilled by a pitch prior to a Chris Briggs walk. Spencer Kuehn followed with an RBI single to edge Key West in front, 4-3. Andrew Redman then doubled in a pair of runs, Kenny Capesius singled home Redman and Dan Spain, Saturday's All-Star Game MVP, drove a sacrifice fly to center field to complete the five-run inning.

A bases loaded walk by Capesius and an RBI single by Austin Bradley in the eighth gave the Ramblers their final 10-5 cushion after Epworth had drawn back to within three with a run each in the seventh and eighth innings.

Spencer Kuehn earned the win in by firing the final four innings in relief of starter Ben Cottrell. Kuehn allowed two runs (one earned), five hits and two walks and struck out six. Cottrell worked the first five innings, showing dominant stuff with eight strikeouts, although he struggled with his control (six walks).

Third baseman Tim Carty had perhaps his best game of the season with a 3-for-5 day that included a double and his first home run of 2012. Carty also scored three runs and had an RBI. His solo shot to lead off the fifth briefly gave Key West the lead at 3-2.

Andrew Redman joined Carty with three hits of his own, including a double. Redman scored twice and drove in two runs. Chris Briggs continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 effort. Briggs' third-inning RBI single gave him 36 runs driven in for the season, eclipsing his own team record of 35 RBIs in 2010.

Key West has now won 13 of its last 14 games, a stretch that dates back to June 14. The Ramblers will put their unblemished Prairie League record on the line again on Thursday when they play Peosta at A.J. Spiegel Park at 7 p.m.

Spain named All-Star Game MVP

On the bright stage amongst the best semi-pro players of the tri-state area, Rambler shortstop Dan Spain showed why he's one of the top players in either area league. Spain collected two hits and reached base four times in earning MVP honors as he led the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League to a 13-6 victory over the Prairie League on Saturday at Cascade's Legion Field.

With the victory in the 26th annual Telegraph Herald Semi-Pro All-Star Game, the EIHL improved to 6-4 in the 10 years of the league versus league format. Monticello pitcher A.J. Reuter picked up the win on the mound for the EIHL.

"This group of guys plays with intensity every time they play," Spain told the TH. "It wasn't the score we expected, but we come out expecting to win every time we play.

"Guys take it very seriously. It's an honor to be here, and we put it all together tonight."

Key West first baseman Chris Briggs and left fielder Cory Davidson also joined Spain in the starting lineup for the EIHL. Briggs went for 1-for-3 with a double while Davidson was 0-for-2.

Spain was the only member of the EIHL to record at least two hits. Ryan Hoerner (2-for-4) and Topher Scheeler (2-for-3) led the way for the Prairie League, which also got a home run from third baseman Chet Knake.

The EIHL put the game out of reach with a seven-run top of the seventh that made the score 13-2. The EIHL sent 12 hitters to the plate in the frame.

Statistics for Rambler All-Stars heading into Saturday's game:
Briggs: .414 AVG, 7 HR, 35 RBI, .472 OBP, .730 SLG

Ramblers notch back-to-back EIHL wins

An EIHL victory on both Tuesday and Wednesday bumped the Ramblers to 27-5 overall and 9-1 in EIHL play. Key West knocked off Farley 4-1 on Tuesday and then followed that performance with a 6-3 win over Dyersville on Wednesday.

Rambler starting pitcher Spencer Kuehn pushed his mark to 4-0 with six stellar innings of work on Tuesday versus Farley. The right-hander allowed only one run and struck out 10 batters to go against four hits and one walk surrendered. Kuehn gave way after six to Cottrell, who pitched the final three innings to pick up the save.

First Baseman Chris Briggs continued his torrid hitting with a 2-for-4 effort that included an RBI single in the second inning. Briggs was the only Rambler to post multiple hits against Farley starter Casey Tauber.

Spencer Kuehn got Key West on the board in the first with an RBI single of his own. Spain then added an RBI base hit in the second prior to Briggs' run-scoring single. The Ramblers added an insurance run in the eighth inning.

On Wednesday, Briggs picked up where he left off with a 2-for-3 night that powered Key West to victory over host Dyersville. Briggs' eighth-inning blast put the Ramblers in front 4-3 and tied his own single-season record in both home runs (7) and RBIs (35). The game-winning homer also allowed Briggs' to break his own record of 78 total bases in a season set in 2010. He now has 81 total bases this season.

Andrew Redman improved to 7-0 in Wednesday's affair as the Ramblers moved to 3-0 versus Farley in 2012. Redman went seven innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks to go with his seven strikeouts. Spain earned the save with a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

At the plate, Redman helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 performance that included a pair of runs scored. Catcher Chad Crabill also went 2-for-3 in his first game serving as the lead off hitter.

Key West is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it travels to Epworth for a Prairie League game. The Ramblers are 9-0 in Prairie League play.

Sixth-inning outburst keys win over Zwingle

The absences of several key players from the Key West lineup on Sunday failed to stop the Ramblers from getting back into the win column. Designated hitter Sam Thies, a local prep standout, delivered the game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the sixth in a five-run frame that allowed Key West to rally for an 8-4 victory over visiting Zwingle at Table Mound Field.

A four-run fifth inning, punctuated by Travis Lyons' bases-clearing three-run double, edged Zwingle in front, 4-3. That lead held up until the sixth when Thies, playing in his first-ever game as a Rambler, sent Kenny Capesius and Deon Ploessl to the plate with a base hit to make the score 5-4. Both Capesius and Ploessl reached on walks to begin the inning.

After a Cory Davidson ground out, Key West (25-5) exploded for three more runs with two outs. Andrew Redman drove home Thies with a double, Dan Spain followed with an RBI single and Chris Briggs crushed a triple to deep right field to plate Spain and cap the Ramblers' scoring output on the day.

Davidson, working in his second inning in relief of starter Aaron Collins, sandwiched in a hit batter in a scoreless top of the seventh on the way to picking up his first victory of 2012. It was his second appearance on the mound this season.

Key West got on the board first with an RBI ground out from Austin Gasper. Spain then came through with the first of his two RBI singles in the third inning prior to Davidson's run-scoring single in the fourth.

Collins went five innings in his third appearance on the hill this season. He allowed five hits, three walks, four runs (three earned) and struck out four. Davidson tossed two shutout innings and fanned three.

Spain powered the Rambler attack with a 3-for-4 day that included two RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Davidson went 2-for-4 with one RBI, a run and a stolen base.

Briggs' sixth-inning RBI tied Spencer Kuehn for the team lead with 32. Briggs also leads the squad with six home runs, just one off his own team single-season record of seven homers in 2010.

Key West, now 9-0 in Prairie League play, returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Farley at A.J. Spiegel Park in Pesota at 7 p.m.

Nine-game win streak snapped at Rickardsville Tournament

For the sixth time since May 13, the Ramblers took the field against Dubuque. Saturday's first round meeting in the Rickardsville Tournament resulted in a 6-3 loss as Blues' starting pitcher Mark Hennessy went the distance in a seven-inning complete game.

Key West (24-5) led 2-1 entering the fifth inning, but that's when Dubuque shortstop Andy Danna struck for a two-run homer that gave the Blues the lead for good as Patrick Kelly (brother of Ryan) made his debut on the mound for the Ramblers. Dubuque added two more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of back-to-back walks issued by Kelly to begin the frame. The Blues then pushed across their final tally in the top of the seventh on a solo shot by Aaron Wulfekuhle to put the game out of reach at 6-2.

After Kelly cut through Dubuque by facing the minimum in the top of the first, Key West drew first blood with Chris Briggs' team-high sixth home run in the bottom of the inning. The two-run blast was Briggs' third of the season against the Blues.

Left fielder Cory Davidson tried to spark a two-out rally in the seventh when he sent a 1-2 pitch from Hennessy over the wall for his first homer of the season. But Hennessy struck out Justin Kuhle swinging to end the game and advance Dubuque to the second round in Rickardsville.

Patrick Kelly went five-plus innings in his first semi-pro start, allowing five hits, four walks and five runs (all earned). He also struck out four in a losing effort. Ryan Kelly relieved his brother and recorded the final six outs for the Ramblers.

Briggs went a perfect 3-for-3 for Key West in bumping his season batting average over the .400 mark to .410. Davidson, Patrick Kelly and Matt Knabel each collected one hit as part of the team's six-hit effort.

The Ramblers were without two key bats with the absences of Dan Spain and Tim Carty on Saturday.

Wulfekuhle led the way for Dubuque, going 3-for-4 including a homer and a double. Danna finished 2-for-4.

The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Ramblers, whose last defeat came on June 12 to Dubuque. Four of the team's five losses this season have come at the hands of the Blues, with three of those defeats occurring in tournament action. The two semi-pro heavyweights will meet again July 21 in the first round of the Cascade Tournament.

The Ramblers will look to get back to their winning ways on Sunday in a 1:30 p.m. contest versus Zwingle at Table Mound Field.

Ramblers take Worthington

For the first time since Key West's rebirth in 2004, the Ramblers are champions of the Worthington Tournament. After heart-breaking losses in each of its first two tournament championship game appearances this season, Key West used an offensive outburst on Saturday night to claim a 10-5 victory over Peosta in the title game.

"This was more of a relief championship than anything else," Dan Spain told the Telegraph Herald. "We're having one of the best years this team has ever had, we're 24-4, and it seems like most of those losses were in championship games. It's a relief to get over the hump.

"We don't even get to this game if it wasn't for the way Andrew Redman pitched (Friday night in a 5-0 semifinal victory over Dubuque). Dubuque has a stacked lineup, and that was one of the best-pitched games I've ever seen."

Redman fired complete-game shutouts in the Ramblers' 1-0 first-round win over Balltown and in the team's semifinal triumph over Dubuque. The right-hander's 14 innings of scoreless work in Worthington made him an easy choice for the tournament's Outstanding Pitcher award.

On Saturday, Ryan Kelly earned the win on the mound. He was backed by 2-for-4 nights by Nick Baldocchi and Spencer Kuehn. Spencer Radabaugh took the loss for Peosta.

The title at Worthington marks the team's fourth tournament championship since last season when the Ramblers claimed titles at the EIHL Preseason Tournament, the Farley Tournament and at the Prairie League Championships.

Key West advanced to tournament championship games this season at both the EIHL Preseason Tournament and at Bellevue, only to suffer walk-off losses in each instance. But Saturday, the moment belonged to the Ramblers once again.

"The key all tournament long was we scored runs in bunches," Kelly told the TH. "It's pretty impressive to score five runs against a team like Dubuque, then come back and score 10 more tonight.

"Then, it's just a matter of pounding the strike zone and letting your defense do the work behind you."

Key West's next scheduled game is July 8 versus Zwingle at Table Mound Field. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.

Ramblers bounce Dubuque, move to Worthington final

The roughly two-and-a-half hour rain delay that pushed Friday's Worthington Tournament semifinal game back to an approximate 11 p.m. start did little to deter first baseman Chris Briggs. The Rambler slugger crushed a monster three-run homer to center field in the bottom of the first, carrying Key West to a 5-0 victory over Dubuque.

Starting pitcher Andrew Redman took it from there. He befuddled Dubuque hitters all night long, allowing only three hitters to reach base in a seven-inning, two-hit shutout (six strikeouts). With yet another masterful performance, Redman has now won all six of his starts this season and sports a 1.10 ERA in 41 innings pitched.

The first of the Blues' two hits came in the top of the first when Kevin Carkeek doubled with two outs, but Redman got Ryan Doty to pop out to short to end the frame.

The Ramblers (23-4) quickly took advantage of early wildness by Dubuque starting pitcher Nick Kirk, who drilled Cory Davidson and Dan Spain to begin the bottom of the first. Following a Tim Carty strikeout, Briggs connected on his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Redman would help his own cause in the fifth inning when he singled to lead off the frame and scored on a Davidson RBI grounder that eluded the first baseman. Key West added their fifth and final run in the sixth inning when Justin Kuhle's bases loaded walk forced home another tally.

The Ramblers will go for their ninth-straight victory Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Peosta in the championship game of the Worthington Tournament. Peosta defeated Epworth 5-3 behind winning pitcher Zack Brautigam on Friday in the other semifinal clash. In the only meeting between Key West and Peosta so far this season, the Ramblers took a 6-4 decision back on May 20 at Table Mound Field.

Baldocchi lifts Ramblers to Worthington semifinals

A one-out solo blast by right fielder Nick Baldocchi in the sixth inning gave the Ramblers the boost they needed on the way to a 4-2 victory over Rickardsville on Wednesday. With the win, Key West (22-4) advanced to the semifinals of the Worthington Tournament, where it will play Dubuque on Friday at 8:30 p.m. with a date in the championship on the line.

The Ramblers' run at Worthington appeared in jeopardy as Rickardsville led 2-0 heading into the fifth inning behind starting pitcher Adam Shwabel. Key West's fortunes turned around in this pivotal frame as Cory Davidson walked, Dan Spain singled and Tim Carty was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Chris Briggs promptly delivered RBIs Nos. 23 and 24 on the year to knot the score at 2-2.

Baldocchi's homer in the proceeding inning put Key West up for good. The Ramblers then added another run in the sixth when Davidson scored as Spain intentionally got hung up in a run down between first and second.

Key West right hander Ben Cottrell made the four runs stand up in another exceptional outing. Cottrell fired all seven innings, allowing one earned run, six hits and two walks to go with his five strikeouts. The Loras College product improved to 5-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.64.

Spain (2-for-3) was the only Rambler to collect multiple hits as part of a six-hit team performance.

Jeff Lehman and Niko Andriotis each notched RBI doubles to account for Rickardsville's offensive effort. Rickardsville's top two hitters in the order - Nathan Hall and A.J. Reuter - both went 2-for-4.

Friday's clash featuring Key West and Dubuque will mark the fifth meeting this season between the two squads. The Blues have come out on top in three of the first four and have won both tournament match ups.

Redman shuts out Balltown; Ramblers roll past New Vienna

A third inning sacrifice fly from Chris Briggs was all the Ramblers needed to get by Balltown in the first round of the Worthington Tournament on Saturday. Andrew Redman fired seven shut out innings to out-duel Balltown's Dave Schenk for a 1-0 triumph. The win puts Key West in the quarterfinals against Rickardsville at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Dan Spain, who scored the game's lone run, got the third inning started with a double. He advanced to third on Tim Carty's ground out and then scored on Briggs' sac fly to center field.

Redman finished with 10 strikeouts and improved his mark to 5-0. The right-hander surrendered only four hits without a walk in Saturday's masterpiece. Redman has allowed just five earned runs in 34 innings pitched  this season.

The Ramblers (20-4) followed that effort up with a laugher, beating New Vienna 12-1 at Table Mound Field on Sunday. Spencer Kuehn and Spain both hit monster home runs to left-center field to highlight a big offensive day. Kuehn (3-for-3), Spain (3-for-4), Briggs (2-for-4) and Matt Knabel (2-for-4) collected two or more hits for Key West.

Four different Ramblers saw action on the hill in the run-rule victory over New Vienna. Kuehn tossed the first two innings, giving up New Vienna's only run in the second due to a bout of wildness. Aaron Collins pitched innings 3 through 5 to get his second win of the year. Collins struck out eight batters and gave up only one hit.

Key West returns to the field Tuesday for a 7 p.m. EIHL contest with Monticello in Peosta.

Ramblers pile up 24 hits, crush Dyersville

The hits kept on coming Tuesday night as the host Key West Ramblers rolled to a 22-4 victory over Dyersville at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta, Iowa. The Rambler attack struck for 24 hits, including 10 doubles and one home run.

Key West (18-4) got nine runs in both the fourth and sixth innings in the team's biggest blowout so far this season. Eight Ramblers recorded two or more hits, with six posting at least three hits.

The fireworks started in the third inning when Dan Spain's single began a streak in which five-straight Ramblers reached safely with hits. Tim Carty, Chris Briggs and Spencer Kuehn connected for consecutive doubles to give Key West an early 3-0 lead. Nick Baldocci capped the frame's scoring with an RBI single.

Kuehn's three-run blast over the left field fence highlighted the monster fourth inning. Davidson achieved a rare feat in collecting a pair of RBI doubles in the frame. A total of 13 Ramblers came to the plate in the fourth.

The sixth followed a similar pattern as Key West brought 16 hitters to the batter's box in another nine-run inning. Kuehn and Baldocci both cracked two-run doubles to keep the line moving. Spain, Chad Crabill and Tanner Denlinger all recorded two singles in the inning.

Kuehn, who went 3-for-4, drove in six runs for a career-high. He was also one of six Ramblers to score exactly three runs.

Davidson (3-for-4), Spain (4-for-6), Carty (2-for-5), Briggs (2-for-2), Baldocci (3-for-4), Denlinger (3-for-5) and Crabill (4-for-5) joined Kuehn in Tuesday's hit parade.

Ben Cottrell started on the mound for Key West and picked up his fourth win of the season. Cottrell threw five innings, giving up four runs (all earned), five hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts. Kyle Staats and Baldocci both pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

The Ramblers play again Wednesday when they travel to Cascade to take on the Reds at 7 p.m. in an EIHL contest.

Kelly K's a dozen; Ramblers pound Epworth

Spencer Kuehn ended Sunday's blowout victory early with a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Ramblers a 10-0, run-rule triumph over Epworth. Ryan Kelly starred on the mound for Key West, throwing a two-hit shutout that included 12 strikeouts.

Kelly gave up just a single in the first and third innings in a dominant performance that allowed him to pick up his first win of the season. Epworth threatened by loading the bases in the third inning with two outs, but Kelly fanned cleanup hitter Ryan Hoerner on a 3-2 pitch to end the frame. Epworth would not put another runner in scoring position the rest of the game.

The Ramblers (17-4) got more than enough in the second inning alone, striking for four runs without the benefit of a hit. Three Epworth errors and three walks issued by starter Dan Grosser fueled the big inning that all but put the game on ice with Kelly toeing the rubber.

Dan Spain added an RBI single in the fourth, two batters after a booming double to deep right center by left fielder Kenny Capesius, making the score 6-0 after four innings. Chris Briggs pushed the margin to 7-0 with a run-scoring single to plate Spain in the sixth. An inning later, Kuehn, who entered the game in the sixth inning, cracked the game-ending three-run homer that easily cleared the left field fence at Table Mound on a 1-0 pitch.

Spain enjoyed another stellar game at the plate after a recent 0-for-17 slump. The Rambler shortstop led the way with a 3-for-3 effort. Catcher Chad Crabill went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI as part of an 11-hit performance by Key West.

The Ramblers, who improved to 7-0 in Prairie League play with Sunday's victory, return to action on Tuesday when they host Dyersville at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Redman one-hits Worthington

Key West starting pitcher Andrew Redman dominated from start to finish, narrowly missing out on a no-hitter as he improved to 4-0 with a win at Worthington late Thursday night. Dan Spain got back on track with a solo homer in his first at bat and the Ramblers cruised to a 6-0 EIHL victory.

Spain's shot over the left field fence gave Key West (16-4) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, which proved to be all Redman needed. The right-hander's only hit allowed came with one out in the second inning when Dan Marshall's line drive one-hopper eluded the glove of second baseman Justin Kuhle.

Redman went all seven innings for his third complete game of the season. He walked three and struck out six in his best statistical outing of 2012 on the way to lowering his ERA to 1.67.

Tim Carty led the Ramblers with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, including a double and a pair of runs scored. First baseman Chris Briggs went 2-for-2 with two singles, two walks, two RBIs and a run. Spain ended an 0-for-17 slump when he connected in the first inning. The shortstop went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Marshall, who went six-plus innings, took the loss for Worthington. He gave up all six runs (four earned) and 10 hits.

The Ramblers are in action both Saturday and Sunday as they return to Prairie League play. They travel to Balltown on Saturday for a 12 p.m. duel before hosting Epworth at Table Mound on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Spain puts his stamp on Clarke baseball

A small dry erase board inside a cubicle tucked away in the upper reaches of the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center on the campus of Clarke University signals the beginning of a new era in Clarke baseball. The board’s penmanship, written in red marker for freshly signed prospects and black marker for targeted recruits, is the work of new head coach Dan Spain.

Spain, officially promoted to head coach on May 17, wasted little time adding red ink to the board. The almost immediate commitment of a former local prep baseball standout drew surprise from some in the Dubuque baseball community and gave instant credibility to the Spain hire.

Less than a month on the job, the Delmar, Iowa, native was giddy to scrawl “Andrew Redman” across the white board in red. The acquisition of the former Hempstead all-state right-handed pitcher and Key West Ramblers teammate marked the first major coup for Spain.

“That was my plan right away, to go out and find the biggest name guy around the area and do whatever I can to land him,” Spain said. “Thank God Andrew Redman is a kid that I’ve known for many years.

“I saw this coming a long time ago, as far as him being a great player. That has mostly everything to do with his character. He’s a great fit, personality wise and everything. He’s just a great fit for what Clarke needs and what we’re about.”

Redman, who went 6-4 with a 2.12 ERA in 72.1 innings pitched at Iowa Central Community College this past season, relished the opportunity to play for someone he bonded with when the pair joined forces for the Ramblers in 2007. The two now look forward to transitioning to a player-coach relationship.

“It’s going to be different,” Redman said. “I’ve always just known him as ‘Spainer.’ Now it’s going to be ‘Coach Spain.’ It’s going to be a different transition. He’s a guy that you look at as a friend, but you respect him as a coach because he’s older than you and he knows more about the game.”

It’s this ability to relate to prospective collegiate athletes plus an outstanding reputation that permeates the tri-state area and beyond that has already made Spain a recruiting dynamo. These traits have provided a shot in the arm for Clarke. Along with Redman, Spain will welcome fellow Iowa Central transfer pitcher Jordan Hohensee to the mix in 2013.

“I guess we’ve kind of shocked the community a little bit with some of the recruits we’ve been able to land,” Spain said. “But my side of it is I expect to get guys like that. I expect to get the best players around Dubuque. It’s not really a shock to me.

“We’re an NAIA school. We offer athletic scholarships. No one else in our area does that. We should be able to get the best players in Dubuque. My main thing is to have the community buy in to what Clarke baseball is all about and what this university represents.”

Spain’s obvious passion for the university and the surrounding community won over Clarke athletic director Curt Long.

“We know he’s had a tremendous baseball playing experience in the area,” Long said. “People know him and respect him, and he’s well connected with the fine players and recruits in this area. It’s a natural for him to lead our program and improve our recognition and notability.”

Spain’s connectivity to local talent has roots in his status as one of the top players in the tri-state area semi-pro baseball circuit. It’s an arena that has put the star shortstop in the spotlight as an outstanding athlete, baseball mind and person.

“I wouldn’t be in this position without Key West baseball,” Spain said. “I have no doubt about that. Key West is what really made me known in the baseball world around Dubuque. Our semi-pro league is so well respected by the people that play in it and the people that come and watch in our community.

“Key West has just as much to do with me being a head coach as anything. It’s been great. It’s like my second family.”

When Long extended the offer on the morning of May 14 to take the reins of Clarke baseball, Spain struggled to contain his excitement. For many of the hundreds of applicants for the position, the opening may have simply represented gainful employment.

For Spain, it fulfilled a dream. It was the chance to bring glory to his alma mater.

“It’s an opportunity I’ve wanted my whole life,” Spain said. “Being a young coach, I didn’t expect it to come this quickly, especially with how difficult it is to find head coaching positions and how many people want this position. It’s a great opportunity that I’m ready to take advantage of. I’m not satisfied with just being a head coach and just saying I’m the coach at the age of 25. I want to do something with it.”

Spain inherits a roster that he admits underachieved in 2012, sinking to an overall mark of 11-31. Those close to the program are confident the results will begin to turn around.

“He’s progressed and succeeded at every level,” Long said of Spain. “He’s a good recruiter. He’s already proven that. We know that he knows the game and that the student-athletes that play for him learn from him and are eager to work for him.”

No one is more eager to get the 2013 baseball season underway than Spain, who hopes to continue to wear out his red marker.

“I’ve been at Clarke here for four years now, one year as a player,” Spain said. “My goal coming to this school was to win a championship and do something great, and I haven’t had the chance to reach that goal. It’s great that I have a chance to continue my career here and hopefully live out what I planned on doing from the beginning.

“I love being here.”

Ramblers unable to solve Dubuque

For the second time in three days, Key West fell to rival Dubuque, this time dropping a 3-1 decision on Tuesday night. Blues' starting pitcher Matt Asche held the Ramblers hitless through 4.2 innings on the way to a seven-inning masterpiece at Petrakis Field.

Key West (15-4) failed to record a hit until designated hitter Chad Crabill laced a line drive base hit to left field with two outs in the top of the fifth. The Ramblers scored their lone run in the seventh when Cory Davidson sprinted home from first after a throwing error by Dubuque third baseman Aaron Wulfekuhle trickled down the first base line.

Blues' second baseman Kevin Carkeek provided the big blow in the game, a two-run double to right center off of starter Ben Cottrell to score the game's first two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Carkeek finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Wulfekuhle tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single for the game's final run.

Key West tallied only two hits off of Asche, who went seven innings and allowed no earned runs to pick up the win for Dubuque. The one run scored by the Ramblers tied a season low. Key West has managed to score a only a single run three times this season - each case resulted in a loss.

Cottrell went six strong innings but dropped his mark to 3-2 despite giving up only three earned runs in 32 innings pitched this season. Cottrell allowed five hits and three walks to go along with five strikeouts on Tuesday in a 96-pitch performance.

Tuesday's loss was the first this season in league play for the Ramblers, who will look to get back on track Thursday at Worthington in an Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League matchup. Game time is 7 p.m.

Briggs' bomb not enough; Ramblers fall to Dubuque

With his powerful left-handed swing, Chris Briggs sent a drive deep over the center field wall for a three-run homer to give Key West a 6-4 lead over Dubuque in the top of the seventh inning in Sunday's first round Farley Tournament battle. However, Dubuque would rally for four runs of its own in the bottom half of the seventh off reliever Dan Spain, eliminating the Ramblers from the tournament they captured last season.

The Blues walked off a winner after Spain's wild pitch with the bases loaded chased Brian Putnam to the plate and pushed Dubuque to the second round with an 8-7 victory. The Blues' four-run seventh-inning rally came on the heels of a five-run Key West outburst in the top of the frame, staking the Ramblers to a 7-4 advantage.

Alex Timmerman got Dubuque started in the seventh with a base hit, making him a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon. Spain then struck out Aaron Wulfekuhle on three pitches before a single and a hit batter loaded the bases. Putnam followed with a two-run single prior to an RBI single delivered by Seth Hoerner to knot the score at 7-7. Spain's first walk of the game loaded the bases for Aaron Saugeling, who watched the winning run cross home plate after a pitch in the dirt escaped to the backstop.

Key West (15-3) trailed by as many as four runs and entered the seventh and final inning down 4-2 against star pitcher Saugeling, who went the distance to earn the win. Matt Knabel lined out to short to begin the inning. Center fielder Tanner Denlinger ignited the rally with a double to center. Cory Davidson followed with an RBI single to get the Ramblers within a run. Spain struck out looking for the second out, but Tim Carty was then hit by a pitch to force the tying run to second base to set the stage for Briggs.

Briggs crushed the 2-0 offering well over the center field fence for his fourth home run of the season. Even with strong gusting winds that gave every fly ball to left or left center a chance to leave the yard, Briggs' shot needed no help.

Three batters later, second baseman Justin Kuhle added an RBI single to give Key West a three-run cushion. The Ramblers appeared well on their way to advancing to the second round as Spain took the mound for his second inning of relief in the seventh after retiring the top-three hitters in the Dubuque lineup in order in the sixth.

Key West did not get on the board against Saugeling until the sixth when Briggs' shallow fly to right field was dropped, scoring Davidson all the way from first. Spencer Kuehn proceeded with an RBI single to plate Briggs from third, giving the Ramblers a pair of unearned runs in the frame.

Davidson finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Briggs went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, two runs and three RBIs. Kuhle was the other Rambler to collect two hits, as he notched a 2-for-4 day.

Saugeling and Alex Timmerman each went deep for Dubuque. Saugeling led off the bottom of the fifth with a mammoth home run to left center off of starter Kuehn. Two batters later, Timmerman took advantage of the jet stream to left center with a pop fly that carried over the wall for a two-run shot, making the score 3-0 in favor of Dubuque. The Blues added another tally in the inning with a J.J. Reimer RBI single.

Kuehn pitched the first five innings for the Ramblers, allowing four runs (all earned), nine hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts. Saugeling gave up all seven Key West runs (five earned) in his complete game effort. He surrendered 10 hits, but sprinkled in nine punch outs.

Key West will get another shot at Dubuque on Tuesday at Petrakis Park. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. in what will be the fourth meeting already between the two rivals. The Blues have won two of the first three in the season series.

Ramblers walk off to victory

An early 4-0 deficit failed to stop Key West from picking up win No. 15 on Tuesday at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta, Iowa. Dan Spain's hot shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth eluded the third baseman scoring Tanner Denlinger to complete the rally and give the Ramblers a 6-5 Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League victory over Rickardsville.

Key West (15-2) began the bottom of the ninth down 5-4 and appeared in serious trouble after a Kenny Capesius strikeout pinned the Ramblers down to their final out with two men on base and still trailing by a single run. Ryan Kelly then responded with a two-strike base hit to plate Ben Cottrell for the tying run. Spain followed with a smash to the third baseman, who was charged with an error, allowing the winning tally to score off of Rickardsville pitcher Jeremy Gerardy.

Behind singles by Ryan Jantsch, Eric Banwarth and Connor Grant and a key error with two outs, Rickardsville pushed across four runs in the second inning to draw first blood. Just two of the four runs scored in the inning off of starting pitcher Ryan Kelly were earned.

The Ramblers waited until the fifth inning to get on the board against Rickardsville starter Tim Felderman. After Spain reached on error with one out in the frame, Spencer Kuehn tripled home the Key West shortstop. Kuehn scored on the very next batter as Chris Briggs grounded to second base for the final tally of the fifth.

Rickardsville added a run in the top of the sixth, again with the aid of a shaky Key West defense. Kelly departed at the end of six trailing 5-2. He gave up just three hits and only two earned runs, while striking out three in his second start of the season.

The Ramblers tightened the score with single runs in both the sixth and eighth innings. RBI singles by Capesius and Briggs made it a one-run ballgame heading into the ninth.

Spain, working in his third inning of relief on Tuesday in the top of the ninth, shut down the top three hitters in the Rickardsville lineup in order to begin the pivotal frame. Spain notched his first win of 2012 by firing three scoreless innings after taking over for Kelly in the seventh. He gave up only one hit and struck out three.

Kuehn and Cottrell led the way for the 14-hit Rambler attack, each recording a 3-for-5 night at the plate. Briggs (2-for-4), Cory Davidson (2-for-4) and Kelly (2-for-6) also collected at least two hits for the victors. For much of the night, Key West was unable to take advantage of its multitude of hits, as it stranded 15 on base.

Tuesday's game marked the first home contest of the season played at Peosta. The Ramblers were 5-2 when hosting at A.J. Spiegel Park in 2011.

Key West returns to tournament action on Sunday when it plays Dubuque at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Farley Tournament. The two squads have split a pair of meetings this season.

Miscues doom Ramblers in Bellevue championship game

The Ramblers were left to wonder what could have been after a narrow 2-1 loss in the championship game of the Bellevue Tournament on Saturday. Two costly Key West miscues led to both Bellevue runs as the host held serve on its home field to claim the tournament title.

The Braves pushed across the deciding run in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs. Third baseman Chet Knake scurried home all the way from second base on a wild pitch as Key West struggled to locate the baseball. Grant Stewart, who started the play at first base, also advanced two bases on the play. Rambler starting pitcher Ben Cottrell then struck out Cooper Stewart to end the threat.

But Key West (14-2) was unable to recover from the defensive gaffe. Bellevue left-hander Justin Eissens had the Ramblers off balance all night as he went the distance, recording 12 strikeouts in the complete game victory. His biggest punch out came in the top of the seventh when Dan Spain strolled to the plate with men on first and second. Spain was sent down on strikes on three pitches.

Key West got its only run in the first inning when Spencer Kuehn knocked in Spain with an RBI single. However, the Ramblers could have easily scored twice in the frame, but Cory Davidson was called out on appeal at third base for missing the bag after he appeared to score the game's first run on a single by Spain.

After going scoreless in the first, Bellevue knotted the game in the second with the help of a Key West error. Grant Stewart led off with a double to deep center field and then advanced to third on the play after Kuehn misfired on his throw to the cutoff. Chad Coakley followed with an RBI ground out, preceding a pop out to short and a strikeout to end the inning.

Cottrell pitched plenty well enough to win, going seven innings while allowing only five hits, two walks and two runs (one earned). He finished with 106 pitches and struck out eight. Kuehn pitched a perfect eighth in relief of Cottrell to keep the Ramblers within striking distance.

But the bottom of Key West's lineup failed to mount a ninth-inning rally, going down in order against the dominant Eissens. Once again, a tournament title had eluded the Ramblers, who also lost in the championship of the Preseason EIHL Tournament to Dubuque on May 19.

Key West will look to continue its unbeaten play in 2012 league games when it hosts Rickardsville on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Peosta.

Ramblers move on to Bellevue Tournament Championship

The Ramblers equaled last season's franchise best 14-1 start on Friday by advancing to the championship of the Bellevue Tournament with a 8-5 victory over Farley. Key West is now 9-1 versus Farley in the teams' last 10 meetings dating back to last season.

Right-hander Andrew Redman improved to 3-0 on the season by going six strong innings, allowing three runs. Ryan Kelly relieved Redman in the seventh inning, getting the last three outs to end the Farley threat.

Spencer Kuehn (2-for-2) and Dan Spain (2-for-4) notched two hits apiece for the victors. Kuehn connected for his first home run this season and first in his career as a Rambler. Scott Harris (2-for-3) and Andy Seabrooke (2-for-4) starred at the plate for Farley, which cruised to an 11-3 win over Dubuque in the quarterfinal round.

Key West will look for its first ever championship at the Bellevue Tournament when it takes the field in the title game at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hometown Bellevue, which pasted Epworth 13-2 in Friday's other semifinal, will serve as the opponent.
