Briggs continues torrid hitting in blowout win

No hitter on the planet is hotter than Chris Briggs. His 5-for-5 day highlighted a 17-4 Key West (22-14) road victory over Placid Sunday afternoon.

Briggs now has a hit in 10 straight at bats, spanning the last three games against Placid, Farley and Monticello. Included in those 10 hits are three home runs, two doubles and seven RBI.

Briggs' hot hitting has overshadowed Tim Carty's recent power surge. Call it the great home run chase of 2010 as Briggs and Carty have tried to out-duel each other, homer for homer. Carty homered again Sunday--his fifth of the season--and trails Briggs for the team lead by just one long ball.

Carty briefly held the team home run lead until Briggs hammered a monstrous drive way over the right field fence in the fourth inning. Briggs then added a towering three-run bomb in the sixth inning.

Cole Boge followed Briggs' at bat in the sixth with his first home run to cap the scoring for the Ramblers.

Key West's 18-hit attack led to a 10-run rule victory at the end of seven innings. Seven Ramblers recorded multiple hit games: Briggs, Jeff Bushman (2-for-3), Jared Munson (2-for-3), Ben Cottrell (2-for-4), Boge (2-for-5), Carty (2-for-5) and Cam Stewart (2-for-6).

Cottrell won his team-high ninth game on the mound, going six innings and giving up four earned runs to go with six strike outs. Chris Powers took the loss.

Key West will play Dyersville at 7 p.m. Monday in an EIHL battle.
